L.A. Square Face
Square-wave fuzz with aggressive, squared-off textures and direct attack.
BLAMMO! Electronics handbuilds pedals in Portland, Oregon, specializing in faithful recreations of vintage fuzz circuits with modern reliability features.
The L.A. Square Face is a reimagining of the classic Diaz Texas Square Face, itself based on the Dallas Arbiter Fuzz Face. Available in germanium (NTE103 transistors, 400-650 HFE for a rattier, blown-out voicing), silicon (BC108b transistors, 250-400 HFE for a more vintage sound), and hybrid versions. The circuit uses audio-grade Nichicon capacitors, carbon composition resistors, and Teflon-coated wiring.
Power filtering has been beefed up to reduce background hiss, and a quieter relay-based soft-switching system replaces the original mechanical footswitch in true bypass fashion. Top-mounted jacks save pedalboard space. The germanium version delivers splatty, gated fuzz tones, while the silicon version offers familiar crunch with more bite when fully dimed. Responds well to guitar volume knob rollback. Draws 32mA from a standard 9V center-negative supply.
