OC-2 Octave
The bass player's secret weapon - thick analog octave-down that tracks like a dream.
The OC-2 Octave is the original Boss octave pedal, released in 1982. It generates one and two octaves below the played note using analog tracking, producing a thick, slightly glitchy sub-octave that became a signature sound for bass players.
Analog octave tracking follows monophonic input and generates sub-octave tones. The tracking is imperfect by modern standards: it glitches on fast passages, chords, and notes below the low E. But that imperfection is the character. The slightly synthesized, wobbly sub-octave sound has become a sought-after tone in its own right.
Octave 1, Octave 2, and Direct Level controls. Octave 1 is one octave below, Octave 2 is two octaves below, and Direct is the dry signal. At 4mA it draws almost nothing. Blending all three creates massive, organ-like bass tones.
The OC-2 is a cult classic, especially among bass players. The analog sub-octave sounds fatter and more musical than digital alternatives to many ears. John Paul Jones, Bootsy Collins, and countless bass players have used it to add sub-bass weight.
