Big Muff Pi
The fuzz that defined an era. Hendrix, Gilmour, Cobain, Corgan all used this circuit.
Electro-Harmonix introduced the Big Muff Pi in 1969, designed by Mike Matthews and Bob Myer. It became the most influential fuzz pedal ever made.
The circuit uses four transistor stages: a clean boost driving two clipping stages, then a tone recovery stage. Sustain, Tone, and Volume controls shape everything from mild grit to infinite sustain. The scooped midrange became the Big Muff signature sound.
Gilmour used it on The Wall. Cobain on Nevermind. Corgan on Siamese Dream. The list of legendary albums featuring this pedal never ends.
The pedal that proved fuzz could be musical, not just noise.
