Expanse
Harmonic tremolo pedal with ambient reverb and delay capabilities, featuring 6 controls, dual mode/voice switches, tap tempo, expression pedal inputs, and 70-110mA power draw from former software engineer Mark A. Stratman's boutique operation.
The Expanse by MAS Effects represents the creative vision of Mark A. Stratman, a former software engineer from Lockport, Illinois, who founded MAS Effects (Manic Audio Science) in 2020. Unlike many boutique builders who focus on vintage circuit reissues, Stratman deliberately targets unmet niche needs and leverages his digital expertise to create unique effects. The Expanse exemplifies this philosophy: it's a highly tweakable harmonic tremolo with integrated ambient reverb and delay, designed for creating everything from traditional tremolo tones to complex textured delays and dreamy soundscapes.
The circuit employs six controls: Width sets the sweeping range of the tremolo, Velocity controls the speed, Expanse determines the amount of atmospheric ambience, Volume sets output level, Vastness adjusts the amount of space added when pressing the Vast Expanse footswitch, and Blend balances wet/dry signal. Two toggle switches provide extensive tonal shaping: the Outer Space switch selects between harmonic tremolo only (Expanse disabled), tremolo with expansive reverb, or tremolo with echoing feedback. The Warp switch offers three voices—from sensible and beautiful harmonic tremolo, to more severe tones with different filter frequencies and increased resonance, to an extreme mode where the LFO not only pans between filters but also shifts their frequencies dynamically.
The Expanse features dual expression pedal inputs, allowing simultaneous control of Width plus either Expanse or Velocity for real-time manipulation during performance. The soft-touch footswitch operates as true bypass or can be held for momentary engagement, while a dedicated tap tempo function allows quick synchronization with your playing. The harmonic tremolo algorithm splits the signal into high and low frequency bands that oscillate in opposite phase, creating the complex, almost organ-like modulation that distinguishes harmonic tremolo from standard amplitude tremolo.
Built in a 94x118mm enclosure measuring 60mm tall including knobs, the Expanse requires 9V DC center-negative power and draws 70-110mA depending on LED brightness setting. Priced at 29, every unit comes with MAS Effects' forever warranty and liberal return policy, reflecting Stratman's commitment to customer service. The Expanse has been featured in Delicious Audio and Guitar World for its interstellar ambience capabilities, appealing to ambient, post-rock, and experimental guitarists seeking a pedal that combines classic tremolo with modern atmospheric processing in a single, versatile package.
