Civil Math is based on the Russian Civil War Big Muff, which featured less scooped midrange and smoother, less aggressive clipping than American versions. The circuit includes a pre-Muff op-amp boost (BOOST control) to saturate and overwhelm the circuit, GAIN control adjusting distortion amount (allowing more treble at low settings), and typical Muff TONE control. Internal MIDS control sets midrange dip or boost amount, and Blowout switch adds additional drive. Standard Boss-style 9V center-negative power with top-mounted jacks.
The Russian voicing retains more midrange presence compared to NYC and USA Muffs' extreme scoop, making it sit better in band mixes and work well for rhythm parts where you need to be heard. The smoother clipping produces less harsh upper harmonics while maintaining thick Muff sustain. This makes Civil Math suitable for players wanting Big Muff saturation without the extreme scooped-mid aggression that can get lost in a mix or sound thin without a band.
