Distortion+
The 1973 original dirt pedal. Simple op-amp clipping used by Randy Rhoads, Jerry Garcia, Bob Mould.
The Distortion+ is one of the simplest and most influential drive circuits ever created. Introduced in 1973, it uses a single op-amp driving germanium diodes to create asymmetrical clipping. The result is harmonically rich distortion that responds to picking dynamics.
Two knobs: Output sets volume, Distortion controls gain. The circuit's simplicity belies its effectiveness. Randy Rhoads used it to slam his high-gain Marshalls on "Crazy Train" and "Mr. Crowley," setting Output high and Distortion relatively low.
Other devotees include Jerry Garcia, Bob Mould (Hüsker Dü), Dave Murray (Iron Maiden), and Thom Yorke (Radiohead). The pedal adds harmonics without completely masking your guitar and amp character.
Original units used 1N270 germanium diodes. The circuit became the template for the DOD 250 and countless derivatives. Modern reissues maintain the essential character that made this an industry standard.
