Double Trouble
Dual-channel Tubescreamer-style overdrive combining vintage TS-808 and modern TS-9 circuits, designed to recreate Stevie Ray Vaughan's legendary dual-screamer tone stack.
The Shins Music Double Trouble is specialized dual-overdrive pedal that pays tribute to Stevie Ray Vaughan's iconic setup of stacking two Tubescreamer pedals. SRV famously used two green Japanese-style Tubescreamer overdrive pedals—one sitting on top of his main amplifier and another on his pedalboard for lead solos—to achieve his signature thick, singing tone. Double Trouble recreates this legendary setup by housing two independent Tubescreamer circuits in single enclosure, allowing guitarists to achieve authentic SRV tones without needing multiple pedals and complex signal routing.
Channel 1 delivers modern 9-series sound (TS-9 style) with much more crisp character and slightly higher gain, making it perfect for lead playing and cutting through mix. This channel provides brightness and articulation needed for solos while maintaining classic mid-hump that Tubescreamers are famous for. Channel 2 offers vintage 808-series sound (TS-808 style) with slightly lower gain and rich midrange to bottom-end response, making it ideal for rhythm work, amp pushing, or boosting applications. This channel excels at adding warmth and body without excessive gain.
Both channels can be used independently or stacked together for maximum versatility. Each channel features its own set of controls, allowing precise adjustment of drive, tone, and level. Stevie Ray's technique often involved running drive control relatively low with volume maxed out, using pedals as clean boosts with slight EQ shifts to push his already-overdriven Fender amplifiers. Double Trouble makes this approach easy while also offering high-gain possibilities when both channels are engaged. Like all Shins Music pedals, Double Trouble is point-to-point handwired in Tokyo with meticulous attention to component quality and tonal voicing.
