Red Llama
CMOS-based overdrive inspired by Craig Anderton's Tube Sound Fuzz. Transparent dynamics.
The Red Llama was Way Huge's first commercial pedal, originally released in 1992. The circuit is based on Craig Anderton's Tube Sound Fuzz from his 1978 book, the first known usage of a CMOS hex inverter for overdrive tones.
The CMOS circuit delivers tube-like dynamics and transparent response. Volume provides massive output capable of forcing even the cleanest amps to submit. Drive spans from gentle grind through crunchy power chords to buttery lead tones and tight, bottom-heavy riffage.
Each inverter stage acts like an op-amp in inverting configuration but sounds fantastic when overloaded. The simple two-knob layout makes it easy to use while delivering remarkably amp-like response to playing dynamics.
