King of Tone
Near-mythical dual Bluesbreaker overdrive with a years-long waitlist. Two sides, three modes each.
Mike Piera collaborated with guitarist Jim Weider to create the King of Tone, first sold in November 2003. It's a heavily modified Marshall Bluesbreaker circuit, refined with Japanese components by Ohbayashi-san, using JRC4558D op-amps and custom diodes for an open, less-compressed character that avoids Tube Screamer mid-hump.
Version 4 packs two independent overdrive circuits, each with Volume, Drive, and Tone knobs. Internal DIP switches select between Clean Boost (no clipping, twice as loud), Overdrive (standard KoT tone), and Distortion (hard clipping) modes per side. Internal treble trim pots fine-tune each channel.
Runs on 9-18V DC at 6-10mA with true bypass. A 2017 That Pedal Show feature triggered 200 orders per day, cementing its legendary status. Players include Noel Gallagher, Brad Whitford, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, John Petrucci, and Gary Clark Jr.
