Wood Cutter
RAT-style distortion using the original Motorola LM308N chip, cloned from a holy grail unit.
Big Ear Pedals was started by Grant Wilson, formerly of Brooklyn indie band The Click Clack Boom, and his partner Karen Schierhorn. Based in NYC, they design pedals with gnarly vintage character, minimalist graphics, and straightforward controls.
The Woodcutter is Big Ears homage to a very particular 308-loaded Kalamazoo classic—the ProCo RAT. Vintage RATs vary wildly from unit to unit, making truly special ones hard to find. Big Ear had what they considered a holy grail RAT, so they cloned it.
Powered by the legacy Motorola LM308N IC, the Woodcutter delivers RAT character but louder and more gnarly while staying true to the originals essence. Three controls—Tone (Filter), Gain (Distortion), and Volume—give you everything from gritty boost to saturated destruction.
Stacked with the Loaf fuzz, it forms the signature sound of UK band Slaves.
