BF-2 Flanger
Jet-plane swoosh from 1980 - the analog flanger that set the standard for decades.
The BF-2 Flanger is Boss's classic analog flanger, produced from 1980 to 2001 and widely regarded as one of the best flangers ever made. A BBD-based circuit produces the jet-plane swoosh, metallic resonance, and through-zero flanging that defines the effect.
The circuit uses a bucket-brigade delay line modulated by an LFO, creating the comb filtering and swept notches that produce the flanging effect. The BF-2's character is warm, rich, and distinctly analog. Higher resonance settings produce dramatic jet-like sweeps; lower settings add subtle movement.
Manual (center frequency), Depth, Rate, and Resonance controls. At 18mA it's power-efficient. The Manual control is the key to dialing in the BF-2: it sets the starting point of the flange sweep, which dramatically affects the character of the effect.
The BF-2 is a classic that many flanger designs reference. Produced for over 20 years, it set the standard for what a compact flanger should sound like.
