FZ-5 Fuzz
Three vintage fuzzes in one - Fuzz Face, Octavia, and Maestro at the turn of a knob.
The FZ-5 models three classic fuzz circuits in one pedal: the Fuzz Face, the Octavia, and the Maestro FZ-1A. Released in 2005, it uses COSM modeling to digitally recreate analog fuzz tones, which was an ambitious idea at the time.
Three modes: F (Fuzz Face-style smooth fuzz), O (Octavia-style octave fuzz), and M (Maestro-style buzzy fuzz). Each mode captures the character of the original circuit, including the dynamic response and cleanup characteristics. The digital modeling means consistent behavior regardless of temperature or battery voltage.
Level, Tone, and Fuzz controls plus the three-mode selector. At 36mA it draws more than analog fuzzes due to the DSP, but less than most digital effects. The Fuzz Face mode is the most popular, providing smooth, singing sustain.
Opinions split on whether digitally modeled fuzz captures the magic of the real thing. The FZ-5 is more predictable and reliable than any of the originals it models, which is either an advantage or a drawback depending on your perspective.
