FZ-3 Fuzz
1993 silicon fuzz with smooth sustain. Quieter and more refined than vintage fuzz designs.
The FZ-3 replaced the cult-favorite FZ-2 in 1997 and promptly disappointed FZ-2 fans. Where the FZ-2 was aggressive and raw, the FZ-3 went for a smoother, more polished silicon fuzz sound. It's a perfectly competent fuzz, just not what people wanted after the FZ-2.
Silicon transistor fuzz with smooth sustain and controlled noise floor. The circuit is cleaner and more predictable than vintage-style fuzzes, with less of the gating, sputtering character that fuzz purists chase. Boss prioritized reliability and consistency over personality.
Level, Tone, and Fuzz controls. At 6mA it barely sips power. The Tone control has a wide range, from dark and wooly to bright and biting. The fuzz character sits between a Fuzz Face and a Tone Bender, but without the quirks of either.
Produced from 1997 to 2005. Overshadowed by its predecessor and successor (the FZ-5), the FZ-3 is the forgotten middle child of Boss fuzz. Underrated for what it is: a reliable, noise-free fuzz that works consistently.
