NF-1 Noise Gate
Original Boss noise gate from 1985. Threshold-based gating for eliminating unwanted noise.
The NF-1 Noise Gate was Boss's first compact noise reduction pedal, released in 1979. It provides basic gating to reduce noise when the guitar signal drops below a set threshold.
A simple noise gate that closes when the signal drops below the threshold, silencing hum and hiss between notes. The gate opens when you play and closes when you stop. Sensitivity controls how quiet the signal needs to be before the gate engages.
Sensitivity and Decay controls. At minimal current draw, it's extremely power-efficient. Produced from 1979 to 1982 before being replaced by the more sophisticated NS-2.
The NF-1 is historically notable as an early compact noise gate. The NS-2's send/return loop design made it largely obsolete, but the NF-1 established that noise reduction belonged on pedalboards.
