PW-2 Power Driver
High-gain distortion with built-in noise reduction. Delivers smooth breakup with responsive touch dynamics.
The PW-2 Power Driver provides high-gain distortion with built-in noise reduction, addressing the noise floor problems that plagued high-gain players in the early 90s. Released in 1996, it aimed to deliver saturated tones without the hiss.
The noise reduction circuit tracks the input signal and gates the output when the guitar isn't being played, similar in concept to the NS-2 but integrated into the gain stage. The distortion itself offers smooth, compressed breakup with a touch-sensitive response.
Level, Tone, and Drive controls. At 15mA it's power-efficient. The noise reduction is automatic, with no separate threshold control, which means it's either subtle enough to work transparently or aggressive enough to notice the gating on fast playing.
A niche product from an era when Boss was experimenting with combining multiple functions into single pedals. Players who needed both high gain and noise reduction appreciated the convenience, though most eventually preferred separate dedicated pedals for each job.
