RE-20 Space Echo
The legendary RE-201 tape echo in pedal form - warble, wow, and spring reverb included.
The RE-20 is Boss's digital recreation of the Roland RE-201 Space Echo, the tape delay unit that defined ambient guitar from the 1970s onward. Released in 2006 in Boss's twin-pedal format, it brings the full RE-201 experience without the maintenance headaches of actual magnetic tape.
Boss's COSM modeling captures the RE-201's three playback heads and their 11 mode combinations, plus the spring reverb. Critically, it also models the tape degradation: the wow, flutter, and pitch warble that make tape echo sound alive. Crank the repeats into self-oscillation and it spirals into chaos just like the real thing.
The control layout mirrors the original RE-201: Mode selector, Repeat Rate, Intensity, Echo Volume, Bass and Treble controls. An expression pedal input controls input volume for real-time dub effects. Stereo outputs open up spatial possibilities the original never had.
Two footswitches handle bypass and tap tempo. At 200mA it needs a proper power supply (no battery option in the twin-pedal format). For players who love the Space Echo sound but don't want to service tape loops, the RE-20 is the standard.
