Supa Tonebender
Four-transistor fuzz based on the Big Muff circuit with massive sustain.
Colorsound, the subsidiary of legendary British effects maker Sola Sound, produced the Supa Tonebender as their take on the iconic EHX Big Muff circuit. Built in the 1970s, it represented a departure from earlier germanium Tone Benders toward the wall of fuzz sound.
The Supa Tonebender uses a four-transistor circuit closely based on the Ram's Head era Big Muff, with BC169B silicon transistors providing consistent performance. While sharing DNA with its American cousin, the Supa has a more aggressive, 'in your face' character with massive sustain and rich harmonic content.
The three-knob layout of Volume, Sustain, and Tone provides intuitive control over the massive fuzz tones. Notable players include Jimmy Page and Jack White, drawn to its combination of Big Muff-style sustain with British Tone Bender attitude.
