The Guv'nor
The 1988 Guv'nor that created the British distortion pedal category. JCM800 in a box.
The Guv'nor launched in 1988 as Marshall's first distortion pedal, designed to capture JCM800 amp tones. The name came from British slang, and the circuit created its own category of British distortion.
Four knobs: Gain, Treble, Middle, and Bass plus Level provided extensive tone shaping. The EQ section differentiated it from simpler American distortions, enabling that scooped or mid-forward voicing players associate with Marshall amps.
The Guv'nor found fans across rock and metal. Gary Moore, Richie Sambora, and many others used it to supplement or replace their amp distortion. The original units became sought-after vintage pieces.
True bypass in original form. The Guv'nor established that Marshall pedals could deliver the company's amp character in floor format.
