Mother
Dual-channel FET preamp pedal co-designed with Electronic Audio Experiments, meticulously replicating Science Amplification's tube-powered Mother amplifier with independent gain stages and versatile output options for recording or amplification.
The Science Amplification Mother Preamp is a collaboration between Science Amplification and John Snyder of Electronic Audio Experiments, bringing the power and versatility of Science's flagship Mother dual-channel tube amplifier into a compact pedalboard and desktop-friendly format. This partnership combines Science Amplification's amp design expertise with EAE's pedal circuit mastery, resulting in a preamp that accurately captures tube amplifier behavior in solid-state form. The units are manufactured and shipped directly from EAE's Boston facilities.
At the heart of the Mother Preamp is its all-analog FET (Field Effect Transistor) signal path, designed to replicate the behavior of tubes running at high voltage. The engineers carefully selected specific FETs to accurately mimic the compression, harmonic content, and dynamic response of the Mother amplifier's tube circuitry. This attention to detail results in a pedal that responds like a real amplifier to your playing dynamics, cleaning up with lighter picking and blooming into saturation when you dig in.
The Mother features two footswitchable channels with independent Gain and Loudness controls. Channel A ranges from wide-open, pedal-friendly clean sounds through edge-of-breakup and vintage crunch territory. Channel B explores higher gain textures, moving through shades of saturation into heavier distortion while maintaining the pedal's fundamental voice and clarity. Both channels share a comprehensive EQ section featuring standard Bass, Middle, and Treble controls, plus two unique controls: Depth and Absence. The Depth control tailors the front-end bass response and feel, allowing you to tighten up the low end for percussive attack or thicken it for massive, resonant tones. The Absence control provides passive high-frequency smoothing when turned up, or active top-end boost when turned down, giving you precise control over harmonic content and cutting power.
What truly sets the Mother apart are its distinctly voiced dual outputs, designed for maximum flexibility. You can run into the front of a guitar or bass amp for traditional pedal operation, feed directly into a power amp or effects return to use the Mother as a complete preamp, or connect to a recording interface when paired with speaker emulation via IR loader or software. Reviewers praise the Mother's exceptionally low noise floor, perfect clean tones on both channels, and wide variety of high-gain textures. Drawing a maximum of 150mA at 9V DC center-negative, the Mother represents a professional-grade preamp solution for modern players.
