Expander
Vintage Japanese-inspired three-stage JFET and germanium overdrive pedal functioning as always-on harmonic enhancer, ranging from clean preamp to saturated fuzz tones.
The Silktone Expander is sophisticated gain-shaping tool inspired by quirky magic of vintage Japanese dirt boxes from 1960s, particularly those manufactured by Shin-Ei. Pedal employs unique three-stage architecture designed to emulate tonal complexity of classic tube amplifiers. First stage features JFET-based second harmonic generator that immediately adds body and depth to your signal. At its heart, germanium transistor stage delivers unmistakable chewy, colorful character reminiscent of greats of 60s. Output stage uses another JFET voiced to emulate first preamp tube in vintage amplifier, ensuring that even when volume is rolled down, you retain that saturated first-tube sweetness.
Expander features three interactive controls that sculpt your tone across wide spectrum. Gain knob ranges from low, asymmetric thickness to medium-gain grind that smooths into rounder odd-order harmonics as you push it. Choke control is powerful low-end sculpting tool that takes you from huge and full bass response to focused and aggressive tightness, essential for managing low-end distortion characteristic of fuzz-type circuits. Volume control balances your output while maintaining amp-first-tube feel. Three-position Voice switch offers further tonal shaping: left position provides dark, rolled-off tone ideal for higher gain settings; center delivers colorful and balanced standard voice; and right position offers bright, sparkling tone perfect for always-on applications.
Rather than functioning as traditional dirt pedal, Expander reimagines itself as dynamic tone-enhancing engine. At low gain settings, it excels as always-on harmonic foundation that thickens your core sound with rich texture and amp-like responsiveness, adding complexity without obvious distortion. As you increase gain, it transitions through rich, gritty overdrive textures before reaching fuzz territory at maximum settings. Pedal's versatility makes it equally suited for subtle tonal augmentation, medium-gain rhythm work, or saturated lead tones.
