Drive Breaker DB-2S
Refined smaller version of the legendary DB-2 overdrive featuring cleaner distortion characteristics and wider EQ range, optimized for lightly distorted rhythm work and transparent boost applications with 13mA current draw.
The Sobbat Drive Breaker DB-2S is a modified, smaller version of the legendary DB-2 overdrive that powered The Edge's guitar tones during U2's All That You Can't Leave Behind era. Handmade in Kyoto by Kinko Music Co., Ltd., the DB-2S maintains the same meticulous Japanese boutique manufacturing standards that made the original Drive Breaker series legendary, while refining the circuit for different applications. The S designation indicates specific modifications focused on distortion characteristics, EQ range, and noise reduction. Unlike the original DB-2 which excels at heavy rhythm guitar and riffs/solos with emphasized low and high frequencies, the DB-2S is specifically voiced for lightly distorted rhythm guitar and transparent boost for solo work. The circuit has been redesigned to deliver cleaner distortion components that work across a wider range of musical genres, making it more versatile than its higher-gain sibling. This refinement allows the DB-2S to function equally well as a subtle always-on tone enhancer, edge-of-breakup rhythm overdrive, or a clean boost for pushing solos above the mix. The pedal maintains the Drive Breaker family's characteristic natural, organic overdrive character with excellent touch sensitivity and dynamic response. The two-band Baxandall EQ provides precise control over bass and treble frequencies, allowing players to shape the overdrive for different guitars, pickups, and amplifiers. Standard Level and Drive controls offer intuitive operation, with the DB-2S maintaining clarity and note definition even at higher gain settings. Physical specifications mirror the original DB-2: compact dimensions of 95.5mm x 124.5mm x 55mm housed in durable enclosure with true bypass switching. Input impedance of 1M Ohm and output impedance of 470 Ohm ensure compatibility with passive pickups and long cable runs. Current consumption is just 13mA when using alkaline batteries, making the DB-2S exceptionally power-efficient for pedalboard integration. The pedal can be powered by either a 9V DC center-negative adapter or a standard 9V battery.
