The Chug represents Solar Guitars' (founded by YouTuber and metal guitarist Ola Englund) first foray into effects pedal market, developed over two years to create what Englund describes as "sound of raging amplifier in pedal format." Released in late 2022, Chug is optimally voiced as high-gain preamp pedal designed to replace preamplifier circuit channel in guitar amplifier, making it true amp-in-a-box solution for modern metal.
Circuit routes signal through network of high frequency and low frequency filters while offering enormous amounts of gain and overdrive. Pedal features extensive control set with 10 parameters across four dual-concentric pots: Bass/Depth, Middle, Treble/Presence, Out/Gate, and LF Gain/HF Gain. LF and HF Gain controls are particularly innovative, allowing players to tailor how much low and high frequencies from instrument enter gain stage—ideal for alternating between standard and low tunings without changing settings.
Built-in noise gate is fed by input signal and indicated by LED color change, keeping palm-muted riffs tight even with maximum gain engaged. Pedal delivers heavy, saturated, punchy, aggressive, and defined tones with enough headroom to let initial attack poke through despite high saturation levels. Every Chug purchase includes free exclusive custom impulse response (IR) file, enabling direct recording into audio interfaces without amplifier.
