Scran
Inductor and transformer-loaded discrete Britpop overdrive designed to capture 90s UK guitar tones from Oasis to The Stone Roses.
The Scran is inductor and transformer-loaded discrete overdrive designed to capture energy and tonality of classic Britpop era, straddling Marshall and Vox tones. First emerging in 2021, MK1 Scran was designed to replicate sound of Britpop era (mostly 1993-97), part of period in 90s UK history dubbed "Cool Britannia." Rather than plastering on EQ to mimic vintage tones, Scran takes very best happy accidents and quirks of old construction techniques and uses them purposefully to deliver true vintage feel. Pedal pushes and pulls from extremes—sub and bass frequencies on one end, and "air band" treble on other.
Maestro Matt Webster of "Let's Play All" first coined phrase "Oasis in Box" when describing pedal, though original remit was much broader and was meant to cover most of key Britpop bands and sounds of that era, not just solely Oasis. Controls follow food theme with British cultural references: THICK (amount of gain and bass going into circuit), SOFT (Neve-esque inductive EQ for treble response), TOAST (gain), HP (thickening gain control for bottom end), CHEESE (subtle presence control), and BEANS (volume). These controls are highly interactive and require some learning to master.
Scran 2 is newer dual-voiced overdrive with two aesthetic editions—"Cool Britannia" and "Indie Sleaze"—both featuring same circuitry but different artwork. Both versions include MODE switch that allows you to toggle between two eras: up is '00s Indie Sleaze (from The Strokes' "Is This It" in 2001 through most of 2000s), and down is Britpop. Guitar World praised it as "pedalboard essential for Oasis fans, but indeed much, much more," dubbing it "The Britpop Pedal" in their "Best of 2022" edition. At 6mA current draw, it remains extremely power-efficient while producing authentic British rock tones.
