Private Beaver
Limited edition Hungry Beaver variant featuring Green Russian and Civil War Big Muff circuits for crunchier, clearer 90s-era fuzz tones.
The Private Beaver is limited edition variant of Hungry Beaver, where two Muff gain circuits (named SCOFF and CHOW) are based on Green Russian and Red Army Overdrive (Civil War) Big Muff circuits, as opposed to standard Hungry Beaver which uses NYC 2000 Muff and Violet Ram's Head circuits. This variant is lower gain, crunchier, and clearer than its predecessor, with pleasant upper mid register characteristic of 90s era Big Muff fuzzes that were manufactured in Russia.
Pedal maintains Hungry Beaver's innovative architecture, allowing you to blend, boost, EQ, and voltage starve Green Russian and Red Army Overdrive characteristics. Green Russian Big Muff was manufactured in Russia circa 1994, with early "tall font" versions being identical to Civil War version. Red Army Overdrive was released in 1991, with "Civil War" version following year later, named after American Civil War because of two colors of pedal: light blue for Union uniform and grey for Confederate uniform.
What makes Private Beaver particularly interesting is its two-band EQ that uses STARVE voltage control as compression tool. Mids dial in Private Beaver is specifically tuned to address scoop brought on by using starve control on overdrive side, allowing for highly compressed mid-push drive tones that are less common in traditional Big Muff circuits. This makes it more versatile for rhythm playing and cutting through band mix. Starve control can be used as compression control for overdrive side while still being able to produce mid-pushy drive sound, bridging gap between fuzz and overdrive in way that standard Hungry Beaver doesn't quite achieve.
