The Step Audio STATUS is a powerful MIDI command center that adds tremendous functionality to any MIDI rig through its combination of visual display, clock generation, and sophisticated mapping capabilities. At its heart is a 16-character LED display using large bright red letters and numbers to show custom messages, tempo in beats per minute, MIDI data, and provide a programming interface. This visual feedback transforms an otherwise invisible MIDI network into a readable, stage-friendly system where you can instantly verify what your rig is doing.
STATUS generates MIDI clock signals for each of its programs, allowing six different tap input ratios to match various musical subdivisions. Players can set tempo via tap tempo or dial it in manually, with STATUS generating rock-solid clock signals to sync delay pedals, loopers, modulation effects, and drum machines. Alternatively, STATUS can pass through or selectively block external incoming MIDI clock on a per-program basis, giving you complete control over which devices receive timing information. The pedal also generates synchronized MIDI CC commands specifically designed for Line 6's MIDI-enabled pedals, solving compatibility issues that plague many MIDI systems.
The mapping capabilities are where STATUS truly shines. In response to a single MIDI Program Change, STATUS can immediately send out up to five additional Program Changes plus 16 Control Change or Note On messages, all on separate MIDI channels. This one-to-many mapping allows a single footswitch press to reconfigure an entire pedalboard, switching presets on multiple pedals simultaneously while adjusting parameters across your rig. STATUS can also actively filter various types of incoming MIDI data, dynamically remap two separate controllers, and rectify running status data - solving technical MIDI problems that would otherwise require expensive rack-mounted solutions.
Programming is accessible either through Step Audio's online programmer or directly on the device itself. Built in Oregon, USA with road-ready MIDI Machinery construction, STATUS features MIDI In, MIDI Thru, and MIDI Out jacks, external footswitch input, and standard 9V DC center-negative power. Drawing approximately 200mA, the pedal provides professional MIDI infrastructure previously only available in studio environments, now accessible on the pedalboard for live performance.
