Red Menace
Hybrid Big Muff combining early Russian Red Army Overdrive grit with 1972 Triangle sweetness, featuring four-knob control for versatile fuzz tones.
The Red Menace holds special significance in Stomp Under Foot's history as their first production pedal, created by company founder Matt Pasquerella, widely recognized as one of foremost authorities on Big Muff construction and cloning. This innovative design blends two legendary circuits: early Sovtek Red Army Overdrive (precursor to Russian Big Muff) and coveted 1972 Triangle Big Muff, creating unique fuzz voice that captures best qualities of both eras.
Circuit's hybrid nature produces distinctive tonal character where low end retains raw, gritty edge of early Russian Muffs while high strings maintain sweet, singing sustain that made Triangle pedals famous. This combination results in more midrange presence and "scuzz" compared to Civil War-era Muffs, with minor variations in transistor values adding character and enhancing pedal's ability to cut through mix.
Four-knob control layout provides precise tonal shaping: Level sets overall output volume, Gain controls fuzz intensity, Mids allows you to dial in presence for live situations, and Tone sweeps from dark and wooly to bright and cutting. Mids control is particularly valuable for preventing common Big Muff issue of disappearing in band contexts. Beautifully built by hand in USA with meticulous attention to detail, flawless wiring, and uncluttered interior using quality NOS through-hole components.
