Active Acid
Prophet-5 SSM four-pole filter with envelope follower, 8-wave LFO, tap tempo, and self-oscillating resonance.
Trap Door Electronics was founded by Travis Johnson, formerly of Death By Audio, bringing his Brooklyn boutique sensibility to small-batch hand-wired pedals. The Active Acid takes the SSM filter chip from the original Prophet-5 synthesizer and builds a four-pole low-pass analog filter around it, turning your instrument into a synthesizer with envelope and modulation control.
The pedal features envelope control of the cutoff with sidechain capability, an LFO with 8 selectable waveforms and tap tempo, fully self-oscillating resonance that can shake low-end or create screaming feedback, external expression pedal input, and a pre-filter overdrive stage for added grit. Multiple modulation sources can control the filter simultaneously—envelope follower, LFO, and expression pedal can all manipulate the cutoff at once, creating complex evolving tones.
It works on guitar, bass, synth, percussion, and vocals, effectively transforming your instrument into the oscillator for a fully-featured analog filter. With extensive control and interaction between parameters, the Active Acid is less of an effect and more of a playable synthesizer module in pedal form.
