Rusty Box Limited Grey/Black
Traynor TS50B bass amp in a pedal—Shellac and Jesus Lizard's '70s solid-state grind.
Tronographic built the Rusty Box to recreate the Traynor TS50B solid-state bass head from the '70s, the amp that defined the abrasive, hi-gain bass tones of Shellac and the Jesus Lizard. This pedal captures that specific mid-'70s solid-state character: aggressive, slightly harsh, and unapologetically dense.
The circuit features input gain, passive three-band EQ (bass, middle, treble), master volume, and a boost footswitch for extra drive. The balanced output doubles as a direct box, making it studio-ready. True bypass keeps your signal clean when off. Power draw is hefty at 130mA—the pedal uses internal voltage doubling to replicate the amp's headroom.
While optimized for bass, the Rusty Box works on guitar if you want that specific Traynor character. The EQ is bass-voiced, though, so Tronographic offers the Boxidizer for guitar players who want a more guitar-friendly version. This is the pedal for bassists chasing that specific '70s solid-state snarl.
