The Melting Sun Preamp v2 represents the second iteration of a limited-run pedal from summer 2022, using JFET (junction field-effect transistor) circuitry to emulate tube amplifier preamp sections. Unlike traditional overdrive pedals that color tone with fixed frequency responses, preamp-style circuits aim to recreate the gain staging and harmonic behavior of actual amplifier preamp tubes, allowing the pedal to function as clean tone shaper or full distortion unit.
Volume controls overall signal level (warning: can be very loud when cranked), Gain adjusts distortion amount from pristine clean to slammed amp-like saturation, Low shapes low-end frequency content, High adjusts high-frequency response. The circuit naturally emphasizes low-end content, making it suitable for bass guitar, baritone guitars, or heavily down-tuned instruments where maintaining bass response through gain stages proves challenging. Version 2 features improved EQ section compared to the original.
Relay-based soft-touch true bypass defaults to bypass when unpowered. 9V DC center-negative power at 30mA draw, 460g weight. Available in bare aluminum or blue finish (blue artwork derives from 2018 photolithography print). Permanently discontinued. The Melting Sun Preamp v2 targeted players seeking amp-like preamp response in pedal format, suitable for doom metal, sludge, and heavy rock where maintaining low-end authority through high gain matters more than vintage overdrive character.
