The Akai G-Drive D2G is a uniquely powerful distortion pedal featuring two independent 6-band graphic equalizers—one shaping the input signal ("Character") and one sculpting the output ("Colour"). This dual-EQ architecture allows an extraordinary range of tones, from subtle overdrive to screaming metal distortion.
Built in Japan with a heavy-duty metal chassis, the G-Drive was part of Akai's professional pedal line that commanded premium prices when new. The front panel includes preset markers for six classic tones (Fusion, Radio, Wild Fuzz, DS Metal, Modern Blues, Crunch), making it easy to dial in starting points before customizing.
With flat EQ settings, the base distortion character resembles a ProCo RAT, but the real magic comes from sculpting frequencies before and after the clipping stage. This makes the G-Drive exceptionally versatile for studio work where precise tonal control is essential.
