OD-1 Overdrive
Where it all began - 1977's asymmetrical overdrive that spawned the SD-1 and countless clones.
The OD-1 was one of Boss's original three compact pedals, debuting at NAMM in 1977 alongside the SP-1 Spectrum and PH-1 Phaser. It established the template that every Boss pedal has followed since: the iconic compact enclosure with a single footswitch.
Designed around a Raytheon RC4558 quad op-amp (later changed to the NJM4558 in Japanese production), the circuit uses asymmetrical clipping to create a tube-like breakup that responds to pick dynamics. No tone control, just Level and Overdrive. This simplicity is part of the appeal: everything the circuit does, it does without any EQ coloring.
The asymmetrical clipping approach directly influenced the SD-1 Super Overdrive that replaced it in 1981, and the OD-1's circuit DNA shows up in countless overdrive designs. Produced only from 1977 to 1985, making it a relatively short run by Boss standards.
Now a serious collectors' item, especially early silver-screw Japanese units. The OD-1 proved that a $40 compact pedal could hold its own against boutique gear decades before 'boutique' was a word guitarists used.
