OD-3 Overdrive
The sleeper hit since 1997 - transparent flat-EQ drive that lets your amp shine through.
The OD-3 arrived in 1997 and quietly became one of Boss's best overdrives. Unlike the mid-humped SD-1 or the dynamic BD-2, the OD-3 aims for transparency: it amplifies what your guitar and amp already sound like without adding its own strong coloring.
A dual-stage overdrive circuit provides a wider gain range than the OD-1 or SD-1, from barely-there to moderately heavy drive. The EQ response is relatively flat compared to other Boss overdrives, meaning it doesn't push mids or roll off bass as aggressively. The result is an overdrive that sounds like your amp turned up rather than a pedal imposed on your signal.
Level, Tone, and Drive controls. At 9mA it's very power-efficient. The Tone knob has a broad, smooth sweep without harsh peaks. The Drive control covers a wider range than you'd expect from the simple three-knob layout.
A sleeper in the Boss lineup. Players who try every overdrive looking for 'transparent' often land on the OD-3 and stay. It doesn't have the cult status of the BD-2 or the history of the SD-1, but it earns its spot by doing exactly what an overdrive should do.
