SP-1 Spectrum
The rarest vintage Boss - 1977 atmospheric filter producing cocked-wah shimmer. $500+ collectible.
The SP-1 Spectrum debuted in 1977 as part of Boss's original 'traffic light trio' alongside the OD-1 and PH-1—the three pedals that launched the compact pedal revolution at NAMM.
Derived from the Roland SR-120 amplifier's unique tone circuit, founder Ikutaro Kakehashi described it as an 'atmospheric filter' for 'flashy, shimmering sound.' The Spectrum knob sweeps the center frequency from 500Hz to 5kHz while the Balance control mixes wet and dry signals with a fixed level boost.
Produces focused cocked-wah tones that cut through any mix. Ironically more popular with bassists (for cutting mud) and keyboardists (for brightness) than guitarists. Works beautifully before gain pedals to add color and presence.
Produced only until 1981 in limited numbers, the SP-1 is now the hardest vintage Boss pedal to find and commands the highest prices—routinely $500 or more. A true piece of effects pedal history.
