EP-PRE
JFET Echoplex preamp recreation with selectable bright/dark voicing and 5mA draw.
ClinchFX is a small-batch pedal builder specializing in recreations of the legendary Echoplex preamp circuit. The first EP-PRE prototype was built in 2007 while the creator was recovering from heart surgery, beginning a mission to capture the 'magic tone.'
The EP-PRE is a JFET preamplifier based on the preamp section of the Echoplex EP-3 tape echo unit. While it delivers a few dB of boost, its true magic lies in the subtle phase response and EQ characteristics that fatten tone and add musicality to any signal.
Two settings based on older (bright) and later (dark/warm) Echoplex versions address different tonal needs. The bright setting adds sparkle and upper harmonics to muddy tones, while the dark setting makes trebly or thin tones sound fuller and richer.
Compatible with 9V or 12V DC power and drawing only 5mA, the EP-PRE can also run on a 9V battery. The circuit is considered among the closest available recreations of the actual Echoplex preamp.
