Firefly
Tone Bender MKIII tribute. Three hand-matched germanium AC128 transistors with Bias control.
JHS built the Firefly as tribute to the late sixties Tone Bender MKIII, using the classic three-transistor germanium circuit that defined British fuzz. The pedal centers around a trio of hand-matched germanium AC128 transistors, capturing the warm, powerful character that made the MKIII legendary. This wasn't emulation—it was honoring authentic topology.
JHS added a Bias knob to the original Volume, EQ, and Fuzz controls. The Bias adjustment fine-tunes power delivery to the germanium transistors, compensating for temperature sensitivity and component variance while unlocking tonal variations from the circuit. The EQ functions as treble cut for darker tones or opening up for brightness.
The circuit delivers loud, powerful fuzz spanning blues through heavy grinding distortion. Standard 9V center negative power, less than 100mA draw. Measures 2.2" × 4.3" × 1.5". Classic British fuzz with the flexibility germanium demands.
