Flanger
The 1976 bucket-brigade flanger. Four-knob design for classic jet-plane sweeps.
The MXR Flanger introduced affordable bucket-brigade flanging in 1976. The circuit uses BBD chips to create the sweeping, jet-plane sounds that defined late-70s rock production.
Four controls: Manual sets center frequency, Width controls sweep range, Speed adjusts rate, Regen adds feedback for more intense effects. The interaction between controls allows everything from subtle movement to dramatic whooshing.
The bucket-brigade technology creates warm, analog flanging distinct from digital processing. The slight artifacts and imperfections add character that pristine digital flangers lack.
Eddie Van Halen used the MXR Flanger extensively on early Van Halen records. "Unchained" and "And The Cradle Will Rock" showcase its dramatic sweep. The design influenced countless flanger circuits that followed.
