Phase V
Roland AP-5 Phase Five recreation with 6 matched JFETs, touch control, and fast/slow speed ramping.
The PastFX Phase V is a faithful reproduction of the 1970s Roland AP-5 Phase Five phaser. It uses 6 hand-matched JFET transistors and operates on the same bipolar voltages as the original from a standard 9VDC supply.
Two distinct control modes define this phaser: Continuous Control uses a conventional LFO for regular phasing rates, while Touch Control uses the input signal level to determine phase speed—louder/hotter signals create faster phasing that slows down as the signal weakens. A Touch Control sensitivity knob adjusts response to playing style. Rate is set by either the Fast or Slow knob, with a Fast/Slow toggle switch that ramps speed transitions similar to a Leslie rotary speaker.
Foot-switchable Touch Control/Continuous Control selection. An Intensity knob controls phase depth. Dual red and green LED indicators flash at the LFO phase rate, with blue LED indicating effect activation. An internal volume trimpot corrects the volume drop found in the original AP-5. True bypass, 120 x 94 x 50mm (1590BB) enclosure drawing approximately 80mA at 9VDC. Handmade in Brisbane, Australia.
