Tephra
Enhanced RAT-style distortion featuring six clipping modes, blendable analog octave-up, independent MOSFET boost, and massive +60dB gain range utilizing vintage Soviet components.
The Tephra is Sentimental Bob Electronics' ambitious expansion of classic ProCo RAT distortion circuit, combining distortion, octave, and boost in single compact enclosure. At its core lies White Face RAT-inspired circuit built around metal can LM308H IC and KR140UD1408A operational amplifier—both complete analogues produced at Kiev military factory in late 1980s. Signal path uses exclusively tantalum and non-polar capacitors, eliminating all electrolytic capacitors for enhanced clarity and reduced noise.
Pedal's six-position clipping selector provides access to tones inspired by various RAT variants: OpAmp mode (Deucetone Rat), Asymmetrical Silicon (Solo Rat), Symmetrical Silicon (Standard/White Face Rat), MOSFET, LED (Turbo Rat), and Germanium (You Dirty Rat). This comprehensive clipping palette allows users to dial in everything from compressed, smooth distortion to open, aggressive grit. Distortion circuit offers extraordinary +60dB of available gain, while independent boost section adds up to +40dB, creating massive stacking possibilities when both are engaged.
Tephra's octave-up circuit is based on 1960s transistor design philosophy, utilizing frequency doubler on matched Schottky diodes to deliver exceptionally clean octave tracking with minimal noise. Unlike many octave fuzzes limited to single-note lines, Tephra's precisely matched components allow for fuller chord playing with reduced artifacts. Dedicated Blend control allows smooth mixing between octave and distortion signals. Clean MOSFET boost stage features low-noise circuit with substantial headroom and additional buffer op-amp for seamless integration with other pedals.
