Hungry Beaver
Voltage-starved Big Muff evolution with dual-gain circuits, active mid-scoop control, and super-fuzz-like harmonic octave capabilities at extreme settings.
The Hungry Beaver is SoundLad Liverpool's exceptionally smart, versatile, and potent evolution of classic Big Muff circuit, pulled through voltage-starved boostable twilight zone. This pedal combines traditional Big Muff-style fuzz with innovative voltage starvation and blendable dual-gain stages to create wide range of sounds from classic 70s fuzz to modern synth-like mayhem. Two gain controls, labeled MEAT and GRAVY, represent different Big Muff eras and can be blended together for unique tonal combinations.
MEAT is thick and chunky like modern "NYC" Big Muff sound, whereas GRAVY is less so with more mids, like classic 70s "Purple Ram" (Ram's Head). These are stacked gain controls that interact in complex ways. Tone control adjusts treble and bass frequencies while shifting mid scoop, and MIDS control adjusts depth or very existence of that scoop, allowing players to dial in anything from aggressive scooped fuzz to thick mid-forward overdrive tones. Innovative STARVE control is what sets Hungry Beaver apart—it starves parts of circuit of voltage and current for splatty, synthy, and just plain nasty fuzz. Most impressively, Starve knob yields incredible Super-Fuzz-like harmonic octave fuzz when set around 11 o'clock.
Hungry Beaver has been designed to slam front end of amp harder than you could ever think possible, making it one of loudest fuzz pedals available. MusicRadar praised it as "fuzz fiend's feast with healthy side dish of boost," noting it can achieve tones from Pink Floyd, Jimi Hendrix, Black Sabbath, and Muse. Version 2 update added master volume control based on customer feedback. At 4mA current draw, it's extremely power-efficient and can easily fit on any pedalboard power supply.
