Octopus
Analog octave pedal with parallel octave-up and octave-down circuits, switchable fuzz for each octave, and master mix control for creating harmonic entanglements and synth-like textures.
The Stomp Audio Labs Octopus is a comprehensive analog octave pedal that enables impressive harmonic layering through its parallel octave generation architecture. Unlike simple octave pedals that offer just one octave direction, the Octopus provides simultaneous octave-up and octave-down circuits, each with independent volume control and mode switching capabilities. The octave-up circuit generates a signal one octave higher (double the frequency), with a characteristically sharp and prominent quality. A small button switches this circuit between clean octave mode and fuzz mode - when engaged, the octave-up becomes an octafuzz, generating significant gain and harmonic saturation for aggressive lead tones or textured rhythm parts reminiscent of vintage octave-fuzz units.
The octave-down circuit produces a signal one octave lower (half the frequency), providing bass-like reinforcement. Its mode button switches between clean tracking and synth mode - in synth mode, the octaved signal becomes a heavily compressed square wave packed with harmonics, perfect for creating synthetic bass tones or lo-fi textures. A dedicated mix control blends your clean signal with the complete octaved signal, allowing you to dial in everything from subtle harmonic enhancement to full-on synthetic mayhem.
Being monophonic (tracking single notes rather than chords), the Octopus works best with lead lines, bass lines, or single-note riffs, though experimental players can exploit the glitchy artifacts that occur with polyphonic playing. The combination of two independent octave circuits with fuzz/synth modes creates vast sonic possibilities - you can run just octave-up for soaring leads, just octave-down for bass reinforcement, or blend all three signals (clean, up, down) for complex harmonic stacks.
Built to Stomp Audio Labs' exacting standards with Silent True Bypass switching, the Octopus received positive reviews from Premier Guitar and bass publications, noting its organic analog character and musical tracking. This pedal is equally at home on guitar and bass pedalboards, offering creative players a powerful tool for harmonic exploration.
