Rift
DIY PCB for building a Univox Superfuzz clone - the 1968 octave-up fuzz used by Pete Townshend.
Aion FX from Des Moines, IA has helped guitarists build studio-quality effects since 2011. They document circuits that influenced generations of effects despite remaining relatively obscure.
The Rift recreates the Univox Superfuzz, originally developed by Shin-ei in Japan as the FY-6 (late 1960s). The circuit uses a phase splitter followed by a differential pair to emphasize the upper octave, with active transistors instead of diodes for signal rectification - distinguishing it from similar octave fuzz designs.
Pete Townshend used the Superfuzz for "I Can't Explain" and "Anyway Anyhow Anywhere." The circuit delivers aggressive octave-up harmonics with a raw, aggressive character. While Shin-ei rebadged it under multiple brands, the Univox version became most recognizable. The Aion PCB captures this cult classic before originals become completely unobtainable.
