Apex Distortion
RAT-inspired LM308 distortion with JFET front end, revoiced for punchy lows and crisp highs.
The Apex Distortion takes the classic RAT topology and rebuilds it around an LM308 op-amp with significant circuit changes. A JFET gain stage at the input adds dynamics and responds to picking attack, recreating the effect of boosting into a RAT. The LM308 stage features revoiced frequency response for tighter low end and clearer highs across both low and high gain settings.
The clipping section combines diodes and an LED for a mix of compression and edge. The tone control works as a low-pass filter reversed from the original: counterclockwise is darker, clockwise is brighter. A JFET buffer at the output adds subtle color as it saturates.
Hand-built in Redlands, California, with the schematic publicly available. Works at 9V only; higher voltages will damage the circuit. Covers everything from edge-of-breakup dirt to saturated distortion with more midrange clarity than the pedal that inspired it.
