Ranges

The Ranges is a preamp-style overdrive built around cascading gain stages: a tuned op-amp followed by two or three JFET stages (selectable via the More switch) with a 3-band EQ sandwiched between them. Each of the six JFETs is tested and selected for optimal performance. The circuit responds to playing dynamics and aims for amp-like breakup without emulating any specific amplifier.

Six knobs cover Volume, Presence, Gain, Bass, Middle, and Treble. Four toggle switches provide additional voicing: Bright adds high-frequency content entering the first stage, Voice selects between focused and full-range frequency response, More switches between three and four gain stages, and Tight controls low-end response between thick and tight.

Hand-built in Redlands, California. Unity gain sits around 10 o'clock depending on settings. Works as a standalone drive or a preamp to push an amp harder. 9V center-negative power only.
