Vulcan
DIY PCB for building a fOXX Tone Machine clone - the 1971 octave fuzz with phase splitter and complementary rectifier.
Aion FX from Des Moines, IA has helped guitarists build studio-quality effects since 2011. They document rare vintage circuits that influenced countless modern designs.
The Vulcan recreates the fOXX Tone Machine (1971-1978), a thick fuzz using a phase splitter and complementary rectifier to create octave overtones. The circuit shares similarities with the Fender Blender but delivers more pronounced octave and smoother tone. The octave generation method differs from the Superfuzz, using complementary rectification rather than differential pair design.
The Tone Machine's unique topology created distinctive octave-up fuzz tones that influenced later designs. Its smooth character and strong octave effect made it a cult favorite despite limited production. The Aion version preserves this rare circuit before originals become completely unobtainable, documenting a key chapter in octave fuzz evolution.
