Quartz
Original tap tempo and MIDI controller with 4 tap outputs, MIDI in/out, and selectable subdivision for synchronizing time-based effects across pedalboard.
The original Selah Effects Quartz Timer was groundbreaking pedal that addressed fundamental challenge faced by guitarists using multiple time-based effects: keeping everything in sync. Before Quartz, manually tapping tempo on multiple delay, tremolo, and modulation pedals was cumbersome and often impractical in live settings. Quartz V1 provided elegant solution by serving as centralized tap tempo controller that could synchronize multiple pedals to single, unified tempo.
V1 model features four tap tempo outputs that can send timing signals to connected pedals, along with MIDI in and MIDI out ports for controlling and synchronizing MIDI-capable effects units. Pedal accepts and transmits several types of tap tempo signals, including Normally Open, Normally Closed, and MIDI Clock, ensuring compatibility with virtually any tap-tempo-capable pedal on market. This flexibility made it universal solution for pedalboard synchronization, regardless of specific pedals in your signal chain.
One of key features of Quartz V1 is its selectable subdivision capability on one auxiliary output. This allows you to set different rhythmic divisions including quarter notes, eighth notes, dotted eighths, and triplets, enabling creative rhythmic relationships between different effects. For example, you could have your delay running at quarter note repeats while your tremolo pulses at dotted eighth notes, all synchronized to same master tempo. This subdivision control opened up new creative possibilities for rhythmic layering and textural development.
Quartz V1 also functions as MIDI controller, capable of sending program changes to switch presets on MIDI-enabled pedals and receiving MIDI clock and program changes from external sources. This bi-directional MIDI communication allows Quartz to act as both master clock source and slave that follows external timing. Powered by standard 9V DC power supply, original Quartz Timer established Selah Effects as serious player in pedalboard utility market and laid foundation for more advanced V2 and V3 models that would follow.
