Killer
Fuzz-Stainer clone with NOS Ukrainian transistors, Tone control (thin to thick)—silicon fuzz face circuit, 9V.
The Killer recreates the Sam Ash Fuzz-Stainer, itself a silicon variation on the Fuzz Face circuit topology. Where germanium Fuzz Faces provide temperature-sensitive, smooth vintage character, silicon transistor Fuzz Faces deliver more consistent, aggressive fuzz tones with increased output and cutting midrange presence. NOS (new old stock) Ukrainian transistors provide the specific tonal character Tom Kogut selected for the circuit, chosen for their gain characteristics and harmonic content.
Level controls overall volume, Fuzz adjusts saturation amount from light grit to full-on fuzz. Tone control sweeps from thin (fully CCW) to thick (fully CW), targeting the frequency range where silicon fuzz interacts with guitar pickups and amplifier input stages. The silicon topology delivers more midrange punch and aggressive attack compared to germanium fuzzes, making the Killer cut through dense band mixes where vintage-style fuzzes often disappear.
Handmade construction with artwork by tattoo artist Liam Sparkes. 9V boss-style center-negative power, daisy-chainable, no battery option. The Killer targets players seeking silicon Fuzz Face character without the quirks and compromises of vintage units, suitable for garage rock, punk, and hard rock where aggressive, cutting fuzz drives rhythm parts and lead tones without requiring careful gain staging or impedance matching.
